If you love to sing, you’ll love Vivace. Our rehearsals are friendly and fun – 150 people of all ages and from all walks of life who get together every week to make great music. We sing a wide variety of traditional and contemporary classical repertoire and always perform with professional orchestras and soloists.
As a Vivace member, you have the thrill of singing not just in Guildford Cathedral and G Live, but also in prestigious London venues, as well as having the opportunity to join our popular summer tours abroad. Besides the singing, choir members can enjoy many other social events including the Vivace Walkers group, fund-raising nights, Christmas and summer choir parties, where you’re sure to make some new friends.
We rehearse on Monday evenings from 7:15pm to 9:30pm at The Millmead Centre Baptist Church, Guildford GU2 4BE. Evenings generally start with a vocal warm-up, and we have a short break during which you can buy drinks, biscuits and home-make cake, or simply have a chance to chat with friends. At your second rehearsal your voice rep will give you an A-Z of the Vivace Chorus which will, hopefully, answer all your questions.
Anyone is free to come along to rehearsals for a few weeks to see how you like us. If you then wish to join the choir, a short audition will be arranged for you with the Musical Director, Jeremy Backhouse. We are not expecting professional level singing so don’t be put off by this – we are simply looking for people with good general musicianship. You will be asked to prepare a short piece, do some scales, a simple sight-reading test and some aural tests.
If you’re interested in joining us, you probably have some questions, so we’ve given the answers to the most common ones below. However, we know you’ll always have more, so why not either email Jane Brooks, our membership secretary, at email@example.com complete the Contact Form or chat with us on Facebook – we are always happy to talk to potential new members.
How much does it cost to join the choir?
The subscription is £160 pa and payment can be made in four instalments. You pay a reduced rate in your first year if you join mid-season but subs are then for the full year and there is no reduction if you drop out of concerts during subsequent years. Students can join for a nominal £10 pa.
Do I have to buy my own music?
Usually you have the choice to hire or buy music. Our librarian lets you know about music requirements well in advance so that you can decide which option is best for you.
What do I have to wear for concerts?
Ladies: Long black skirt or trousers, a black long-sleeved top and Vivace scarf, which is available from the choir. For some of our less formal concerts, including our foreign trips, we wear short-sleeved t-shirts in a range of colours.
Men: Dinner suit with black bow tie for our formal concerts, and black shirts for our tours and less formal concerts.
