Beethoven Choral Symphony

Saturday, 19 May 2018 - 7:30pm

Following our triumphant performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony in November 2017, Vivace Chorus returns to Guildford Cathedral with another firm favourite – Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

Beethoven’s setting of Friedrich von Schiller’s poem Ode to Joy has become one of the most recognised pieces of music in the world, and is currently in Classic FM’s Hall of Fame top 10.

We’re pairing this monumental work with Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms. Commissioned for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and first performed in 1930, this is an energetic, engaging and exciting work in three short movements – the two works together making for a truly memorable musical journey.

Stravinsky: Symphony of Psalms
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9

We are supporting the Alzheimer's Society

We’ve teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Society for this concert, and there will be a bucket collection at the end of the performance. There is an increasing amount of research into the positive effect of music for people who have dementia, and we are inviting those with dementia and their carers to our afternoon rehearsal at Guildford Cathedral so that they can enjoy the music in an informal setting.

Review - Stravinsky and Beethoven Choral Symphony 9 May 2018

A spirited performance of the Beethoven 9th Symphony was conducted with aplomb by Jeremy Backhouse; he uses the acoustic of the wonderful Guildford Cathedral well to bring the structure to life, and the journey towards the Ode to Joy (sung passionately by chorus and soloists alike with clear diction) was compelling. The soloists, most notably the baritone, embraced the spirit of the work with their sense of drama and excellent delivery of the text. The Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms had poise, space and Jeremy brought a keen ear for the subtle timbres throughout.
