Review - Stravinsky and Beethoven Choral Symphony 9 May 2018

A spirited performance of the Beethoven 9th Symphony was conducted with aplomb by Jeremy Backhouse; he uses the acoustic of the wonderful Guildford Cathedral well to bring the structure to life, and the journey towards the Ode to Joy (sung passionately by chorus and soloists alike with clear diction) was compelling. The soloists, most notably the baritone, embraced the spirit of the work with their sense of drama and excellent delivery of the text. The Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms had poise, space and Jeremy brought a keen ear for the subtle timbres throughout. The chorus successfully captured the appropriate sound to realise Stravinsky’s vision for the chorus and orchestra to be equal partners.
